Who We Are

The Lighthouse Experience is a group created in 2021 by four communication major students at DCCC. Our mission is to be a beacon of light through the mental struggles had by young adults and into older adult life. We are raising awareness to end the stigma that surrounds mental health and asking for help.

End The Stigma

Our Team

Stephanie Benecke

Leader

Hey I’m Stephanie and I go by Steph! I’m in my second year as a part time Communications Major at DCCC. I work full time for a pediatrics hospital in administration. I have a personal connection with the cause that we stand for to end the stigma surrounded mental health because I myself struggle with mental health issues. The more platforms opened and conversations had about mental health the more we can normalize asking for help and getting the proper care needed!

Enidza Ott

Researcher

My name is Enidza Ott. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. I’m a mother of 3 children, a stay at home mom and a student. I’m a Communication studies and Photography  major. I love the goal of our project because as a mother I want my kids to grow up in a world where mental illness are treated as any other illness, with openness and respect. Where they can feel comfortable asking for help and discussing their issues.

Marcus Allen Helem

Organizer

My name is Marcus Helem and I am almost 22 years old. I am close to finishing my communications degree at DCCC and hope to get into the entertainment industry of sorts. The reason I chose our topic of ending the stigma of asking for help when it comes to mental health is because personally I have dealt with the issues directly and indirectly. I believe that asking for help is being strong, rather than not asking and sitting in misery. Being “weak” is a figment of society's imagination and being healthy is what comes first in anyone's life.

Tyler Martino

Social Media

My name is Tyler Martino and I am in my last semester at DCCC. As a communications major I really like the idea of our groups goal because having personally dealt with mental health problems the biggest thing I believe is to reach out. It is hard but once you do it only gets better.
